A group of political parties has issued a public statement, which reads as follows:
\nThe Preparatory Committee for the Syrian National Dialogue Conference, appointed by the transitional government, has invited a large number of Syrian individuals to hold what it calls the National Dialogue Conference in Damascus, in an attempt to legitimize itself. By doing so, it seeks to present the invited individuals as representatives of the Syrian people, when in reality, they represent no one but themselves.
\nThis approach of selecting individuals by a committee formed by one party and portraying them as legitimate or true representatives of various regions of Syria is no different from the tactics and manipulations of the defunct Syrian regime. It does not serve the future that Syrians aspire to.
\nIn countries that have faced circumstances similar to those in Syria, national issues are addressed through a national meeting attended by representatives of the people\u2019s diverse communities and political forces. These representatives discuss and agree on constitutional principles that guarantee the rights of all components of society. A national popular conference is then convened to ratify these principles\u2014not through the method the transitional government in Syria is currently pursuing.
\nVarious regions of Syria have their legitimate representatives from different communities, as well as political and military forces.
\nWe, the forces and parties signing this statement, affirm that a genuine national dialogue conference must be inclusive, bringing together representatives of all communities, political blocs, active parties and organizations, and social and civil forces. This is the only way to ensure a true dialogue that reflects the will of the Syrian people.
\nConversely, conferences held with superficial representation of individuals who do not genuinely reflect Syria\u2019s communities are meaningless, lack credibility, and will not contribute to finding real solutions to the crisis the country is experiencing.
