The components of the “Jazira” canton in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, including the Syriac-Assyrian people represented by the Syriac Union Party, organized a demonstration and march in front of the United Nations headquarters to express their rejection of the new Syrian constitutional declaration and to demand its reformulation to ensure the representation of all Syrian components.
As part of the ongoing series of condemnations and rejections of the new Syrian constitutional declaration, which was signed by the head of the transitional phase in Syria, “Ahmad Al-Sharaa,” last Thursday, parties, components, and residents of the city of “Qamishli” in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, including the Syriac Union Party, organized a demonstration that started from “Khalij” roundabout and moved toward the United Nations headquarters in “Qamishli.”
During the demonstration, participants raised banners and chanted slogans calling for the cancellation of the constitutional declaration, which they believe does not represent or meet the aspirations of all Syrians. They also demanded the reformulation of a new declaration that considers and guarantees the rights of all Syrian components, including the indigenous Syriac-Assyrian people.
The demonstration included speeches delivered by representatives of several parties and regional components, including Syriac-Assyrians, Arabs, and Kurds. Among them was “Sabah Shabo,” a member of the Syriac Union Party, who affirmed in her speech the rejection of the provisions of the constitutional declaration and the refusal to limit the representation of Christians to a purely religious aspect. She emphasized the necessity of recognizing the national, linguistic, and historical rights of the Syriac-Assyrian people.
Shabo also spoke about the Autonomous Administration and its social contract, which ensured the rights of all the region’s peoples, preserving their cultural, historical, and national rights.
On the sidelines of the demonstration, Shabo gave a statement to Syriac Press, in which she said that the demonstration was held to amplify the voice of their people through the Syriac Union Party as the representative of the Syriac-Assyrian people in Jazira.
She added that the constitutional declaration does not represent the Syrian components, especially the Syriac-Assyrian people, who have suffered from marginalization and exclusion for decades in Syria, a country whose very name is derived from the Syriac people.
Shabo further stated that the demonstrators called for drafting a new constitution that equally represents all Syrians, regardless of their affiliations and sects, within a decentralized and pluralistic Syria.
