The Syriac-Assyrian people in Derik celebrated the Babylonian-Syriac-Assyrian New Year, Akitu, with a large official and public turnout.
The event was organized by the Coordination and Consultation Committee of the National Parties of the Syriac-Assyrian People in Syria and featured artistic and musical performances, as well as several speeches.
Eileen Gorgis, a member of the Syriac Union Party Council, delivered a speech welcoming the attendees. She emphasized that the occasion is not merely a commemoration of an ancient memory but a reaffirmation of the ongoing national struggle and the pursuit of the rights of our people in the land of our ancestors.
Additionally, Hussam Al-Qass delivered a speech on behalf of the Assyrian Organization, in which he stressed the importance of preserving and reviving the history of the Syriac-Assyrian people and defending it, highlighting the necessity of unity and solidarity among Syriac-Assyrian people to achieve their legitimate aspirations.
The celebration also featured a theatrical sketch titled “We and Akitu”, performed by the Ornina troupe of the Assyrian Organization, along with the “Tasaqn” dance piece and several folkloric dance performances. The event also included a musical performance by artist Sami Mrad.
