The return of displaced persons to their homes is an inalienable right that must not be violated or obstructed. The right of return is a right that extends to all residents of the region, without discrimination or exception.
The return of the residents of Ras al-Ayn, within the framework of the existing understanding and agreement with the Syrian government and under its guarantees, must be respected and adhered to by all parties. The recent attacks, vandalism, and beatings to which the convoy of returnees was subjected upon its arrival in Ras al-Ayn are unacceptable and serve no one’s interests.
Such actions only exacerbate tensions and create an atmosphere of animosity and discord among the people of the region. Moreover, they could potentially lead to retaliatory actions that we can all do without. Accordingly, we call on the Syrian government and all local parties, forces, and actors to assume their responsibilities, ensure the safety and protection of the returnees, respect the agreements and decisions that have been reached, and commit to the safe and dignified return of all displaced persons to their homes.
Respecting the right of return and honoring agreements and guarantees is everyone’s responsibility. It is the path to stability, preventing discord, and protecting the social fabric of the region.
