With the arrival of the Babylonian-Assyrian New Year, Akitu, the Syriac-Assyrian people celebrated in the village of Tel Wardiyat in Khabur, in the countryside of Hasakah. The celebration was organized by the Coordination and Consultation Committee of Our National Parties in Syria, with the participation and presence of representatives from various political parties, media, social, religious, and cultural institutions, as well as a large number of Syriac-Assyrian people and other communities.
The event began with a welcome speech, followed by a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs of our people. Then, artist Jack Yonadam performed a national song for the occasion. This was followed by a traditional Assyrian artistic performance presented by the Athra Troupe of the Assyrian Democratic Party’s Youth Division.
Several speeches were delivered by officials from our people’s institutions, including Hiba Asia, the representative of the Women’s Office in the Assyrian Democratic Party, who began her speech by welcoming the attendees. She stated that the celebration is not merely a remembrance of a glorious past, but a reaffirmation of the ongoing national struggle, emphasizing the need for unity and solidarity among our people to achieve our legitimate aspirations.
Next, Nabil Oshana delivered a speech on behalf of the Assyrian Democratic Organization, starting by congratulating all Syrians on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, followed by welcoming the attendees and party representatives present at the event. He then extended his best wishes and congratulations for the Akitu festival.
Following that, the Syriac Union Party’s speech was delivered by Fadi Dawy, the co-chair of the party’s branch in Hasakah. He began by welcoming the guests and congratulating all our people, the Syrian people, the security and military forces, and the families of the martyrs. He added that on this day of renewal, rebirth, and giving, the party strives to achieve national aspirations and goals for our people and all Syrians, reaffirming commitment to history, identity, culture, and its revival.
Dawy also spoke about the historical achievements of the region’s peoples through joint struggle and alliances with other components, leading to the establishment of the Autonomous Administration and the Syrian Democratic Forces.
Furthermore, Dawy condemned the actions of the Syrian transitional administration, describing them as a one-sided approach that seeks to marginalize other communities, which he warned would lead to further crises. He emphasized that the party remains committed to working towards its goals, the aspirations of all Syrians, and the establishment of a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized state.
In addition to the speeches, the event included folkloric performances by the Assyrian Youth Union troupes, an artistic presentation by the Syriac Cultural Association, and a musical segment by the Elias Hanna Heritage Foundation troupe. Congratulatory telegrams from various parties, organizations, and public figures were also read during the celebration.
