A delegation from the Coordination and Consultation Committee of our Syriac Assyrian national parties welcomed Ms. Nadine Maenza, representative of the U.S.-based Religious Freedom Institute, on Saturday evening at the headquarters of the Syriac Union Party in Qamishli.
The delegation receiving Ms. Maenza included Ephrem Isaac, Head of Public Relations for the Syriac Union Party; Korya Shabo, Head of the Assyrian Democratic Organization in Syria; Bashir Saadi, Deputy Head of the Assyrian Democratic Organization; Barsoum Yousef, member of the General Secretariat of the organization; Wael Mirza, Head of the Assyrian Democratic Party in Syria; and Johnny Hermiz, member of the Executive Committee of the Assyrian Democratic Party.
During the meeting, discussions revolved around several key topics, most notably the situation of Christians in Syria and Iraq, the current phase both countries are experiencing, and its impact on the Christian presence. The focus was placed on the current situation in Syria, the perspective of Syriac Assyrian political parties on developments in the country, as well as the political movement and the transitional process.
The attendees also discussed the agreement signed between the Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mr. Mazloum Abdi, and the President of Syria’s Transitional Phase, Mr. Ahmed al-Sharaa. The Syriac Assyrian national parties viewed the agreement as positive, coming at a critical and challenging time, and bringing relief to the Syrian people in general. They noted that the agreement alleviated fears of a new war in the region, while expressing reservations about the marginalization or omission of the Syriac Assyrian people’s name in the signed memorandum of understanding.
