As part of a visit aimed at meeting with church leaders, Christian organizations, and active political parties in the region, and to learn about the situation of Christians in Syria after the fall of the Syrian regime, a German Christian human rights delegation met with Sanharib Barsom, co-Chair of the Syriac Union Party, Waddah Khory, President of the Levantine National Council, and Gabriel Moshi, representative of the Assyrian Democratic Organization, at the Syrian capital, Damascus.
This visit comes amid recent reports of Christians being subjected to persecution, killings, displacement, and intimidation by unknown assailants, while the Syrian government, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, remains silent and inactive.
During the meeting, officials from the Syriac Assyrian political parties gave an overview of the situation of Christians and the Syriac Assyrian people in Syria, presenting a clear picture of the violations they are facing. They also shared their vision for the future of Syria, stressing the need to recognize the rights of all peoples in the Syrian constitution, the importance of implementing a decentralized system as the guarantor of the rights, existence, and representation of all communities, and the necessity of amending the current constitutional declaration, which currently reinforces a unilateral principle and monopolization of power.
For its part, the German delegation affirmed that it will work to convey this reality to European parliaments and governments, expressing its solidarity with the Christians and their legitimate demands for genuine representation in the government, parliament, and constitution. The delegation stressed that it will do everything possible and exert maximum efforts to support and assist the Christians of Syria.
