In the aftermath of the recent events that took place in the city of Al-Suqaylabiyah, the Syriac Union Party issued a statement to public opinion, stating:
“We strongly condemn, in the harshest terms, the attack that targeted the city of Al-Suqaylabiyah on the night of Friday, March 27, in which residents and their properties were assaulted by a group of youths from neighboring villages. This incident initially occurred with the backing of Internal Security Forces, which proceeded to arrest a number of the city’s young men who were defending their honor against these infiltrators seeking to drag the city into a sectarian conflict whose consequences would extend across all of Syria.
The statement continued:
Such acts, along with ongoing threats and provocations in various areas with a distinct Christian character—occurring almost daily—are alarming indicators of a trajectory toward a point of no return and potential collapse, unless there is strong and effective intervention by the Syrian government. The government must reconsider its approach to governing a pluralistic Syrian society, maintain equal distance from all components, and work toward genuine partnership across all administrative, security, and service sectors. It must also revise the constitutional declaration and refrain from issuing any laws that could undermine national unity. Furthermore, all offenders and lawbreakers must be held accountable through transparent and public legal processes.
Christians in Syria have always contributed—and continue to contribute—to building and developing their country. They have lived in love and peace alongside their fellow Syrians from all communities, upholding coexistence and civil peace. Today, they are stronger than ever due to their unity and steadfast attachment to their land—the land of their forefathers. They have the right to be true partners in shaping the new Syria—a Syria rising today after long years of oppression and injustice, through the efforts of all its people.
Given the current unstable security situation and the inability of security forces to fully control incidents affecting Christians, it has become an urgent necessity to allow Christians to join the Internal Security Forces. This would enable them to contribute to protecting their areas and maintaining security, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior. This step would reinforce safety and stability, and we hope that all Christian leaders will adopt it as a national option. Christians must continue to play their role in all aspects of life in building a Syria for all its people—a unified and strong Syria enriched by its national and religious diversity.”
