The SUP in Syria issued a statement saying:
“On the evening of Sunday, June 22, 2025, a terrorist attack took place at Mar Elias Church in the capital, Damascus. A terrorist entered the church, opened fire on the worshippers, and then detonated himself. This cowardly terrorist act resulted in dozens of martyrs and injuries. According to initial information, the terrorist organization “ISIS” claimed responsibility for this attack.”
The statement condemned this terrorist act that targeted one of the sacred places within the capital, Damascus, describing it as a step aimed at threatening Christians in Syria and a continuous effort to force their displacement from their homeland, Syria. The party held the Syrian government fully responsible for uncovering the details of this crime that shook the conscience of all Syrians of different affiliations, reaffirming the Syrian people’s commitment to the unity of their national fabric, coexistence, and standing against anyone seeking to sow discord and exploit sectarian and divisive tensions.
The statement continued:
“In light of this painful and significant event that took place in Mar Elias Church, it reminds us of the systematic scenario of targeting Iraqi Christians through direct terrorist acts, including the bombing of the Sayidat al-Nejat Cathedral (Our Lady of Salvation Cathedral). Those acts and policies contributed to their displacement from their homeland. Now, in Syria, amid a transitional phase marked by considerable security, administrative, and political weakness, and for the sake of a better future for Syria and all its components and to protect its diversity, we demand the Syrian government to protect Christians and all religious and ethnic minorities in Syria — a national duty it must fulfill. However, if it fails to do so, our people will have no choice but to rely on their own capabilities to protect themselves against these imminent dangers.”
The SUP concluded its statement by offering its deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and wishing a speedy recovery for the wounded. It also extended condolences to the entire Syrian people who reject terrorism and intimidation, affirming that hope always remains to achieve peace and security and to reach a democratic, pluralistic, decentralized Syria that guarantees rights for all, consolidates civil peace, and coexistence in accordance with international human rights standards.
