Statement to the Public Opinion
For several days now, Suwayda Governorate has been witnessing painful and bloody events that have escalated due to local tensions and security and military interventions, resulting in massacres against civilians. This escalation, fueled by hate speech and extremist ideology, threatens civil peace and undermines the foundations of coexistence among the people of one nation, with its dangers now beginning to extend to other governorates.
In light of these serious developments, which affect Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and stability—and threaten to destroy civil peace and the bonds of coexistence among Syria’s diverse components—we hold the Syrian government responsible. The government failed to contain the crisis from the outset in an appropriate manner; on the contrary, it viewed the situation as an opportunity to impose control over a region with unique sensitivities and characteristics, favoring a security and military solution over dialogue, understanding, and peaceful resolution. This approach aims to entrench a strict centralized regime across all Syrian regions under the pretext of preserving national unity. We reject this model, as it reflects a failure in managing diversity and ignores the legitimate demands of Syrians for freedom and dignity and the great sacrifices they made to overthrow the dictatorial Assad regime
While we call on all parties to de-escalate and prioritize reason over weapons and killing, and to exercise restraint, it is incumbent upon the Syrian government to find sustainable solutions to all problems before the country slides into the abyss. It must also work to reassure all Syrian components, build trust among them, criminalize hate speech, activate transitional justice, and hold wrongdoers and criminals accountable for the recent events. These are practical steps aimed at calming tensions and providing reparations—while ensuring the rights and presence of Syrian components are not marginalized. These components must be relied upon to stand side by side in building a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized Syria.
Glory and eternal peace to the righteous martyrs.
